This session will discuss how hourly tariffs, locational signals, and new pricing models can create new opportunities for battery energy storage systems. The panel will explore how BESS can support consumers, grids, and markets by responding to more granular price signals, reducing costs during critical periods, and contributing to more efficient power-system operations.

Since November 2022, Sergio Jacobsen has been the CEO of Micropower Energy, a company belonging to the Comerc Energia, Siemens and Equinor Groups, which operates in the energy storage solutions segment and whose mission is to bring solutions capable of contributing to Brazil's energy transition towards a more sustainable model for the economy, the environment and society. He previously worked at Siemens for 22 years. In the organization, Sergio held the positions of Sales Manager, Smart Grids Manager and Director until becoming Vice President of Siemens Smart Infrastructure. With a degree in Electrical Engineering from Mackenzie University and an Executive MBA from ESMT Berlin, Sergio joined Micropower at a time of transformation in the electricity sector, which is demanding modernization and adaptation to new digital solutions for business evolution, with a focus on smart grids that enable the addition of more and more renewable energy sources in Brazil and around the world.

Pedro Luz is one of Aurora Brazil's leading consultants in energy storage. During his time in Aurora, Pedro has led the Advisory team on several different BESS studies, including: modelling auction strategies for Brazil's largest power firms; developing regulatory and market recommendations to promote battery deployment in Brazil; and valuating co-located BESS business cases both in Brazil and in Iberia. His experience also includes power price and curtailment forecasts, support for M&A transactions, and contributions for power market regulation. Prior to Aurora, Pedro gathered experience as an energy efficiency consultant for the building sector, developing strategies to optimize energy consumption, reduce GHG emissions, and improve climate adaptation.

Donato da Silva Filho is the founder and CEO of Volt Robotics, a boutique consulting firm that transforms complex data into clarity for high-impact decision-making. Under his leadership, Volt aims to establish itself as a trusted advisor to the utilities and infrastructure sectors, combining technical expertise, data science, and artificial intelligence to solve complex problems-particularly when significant risk, uncertainty, and value are at stake. Throughout his career, Donato has worked on strategic issues in the power sector, including curtailment, energy storage systems, price formation, risk management, tariffs, distributed generation, energy trading, research and development, and technical support for highly complex disputes. He is a professor at Fundação Dom Cabral and teaches graduate courses in Computational Modeling and Intelligent Systems at the University of São Paulo (USP) and FIA Business School. He earned his Electrical Engineering degree with honors from the São Carlos School of Engineering at USP and completed a direct-entry PhD at the same university. He was also a researcher at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Cornell University. His executive education includes programs at Insper, Fundação Dom Cabral, IESE Business School, Amana Key, and MIT, as well as an immersion program in Silicon Valley and Xynteo's Leadership Vanguard Program.
