Solar Energy in Brazil: Which are the Barriers and Opportunities for Women Professionals in the Field?

Free Webinar

Thursday, June 10, 2021 | 4pm CET/11am BRT | Webinar Language: Portuguese

Did you know that only one-third of professionals in the solar industry in Brazil are women? Despite this fact, women tend to have a higher level of education than men working in the sector. To shed light on these questions, the Brazilian Network of Women in Solar Energy (MESol Network) launches the unprecedented study "Solar Energy in Brazil: which are the barriers and opportunities for women professionals in the sector?", with support from the German-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Rio de Janeiro (AHK Rio), the C40 Cities Finance Facility (CFF), and the German Cooperation (GIZ). In this webinar, we will explore the results and findings of the study with presentations by two of the report's authors, Kathlen Schneider and Natália Chaves, both from MESol Network, and João Fávaro, project supervisor representing GIZ.

Aline Pan, Co-founder Rede Brasileira de Mulheres na Energia Solar (MESol)

Aline holds a bachelor's degree in Physics from Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) (2002), a master's degree in Materials Engineering from PUCRS (2004), and a doctorate in Photovoltaic Solar Energy from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (2009). She has experience in Solar Photovoltaic Energy, Renewable Energies, Physics and Materials Engineering and Technology. She coordinated/designed the Specialization Course in Renewable Energy from 2012 to 2018 at PUCRS. Currently, she is an Adjunct Professor in the Energy Management Engineering Course and the National Professional Master in Physics Teaching at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)/Campus Litoral Norte. Member/guest of the Working Group "Gender Equity" promoted by CAPES (2018). Co-founder of the Brazilian Network of Women in Solar Energy (Rede MESol). Mother of two children, Sofia and Benício, 2012 and 2014.

Our Guests

Natália Chaves, Vocational Training and Sustainability Assistant, Brazil-Germany Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Rio de Janeiro

Environmental Scientist, specialized in Renewable Energy Management, with emphasis on research and studies about the solar energy sector. She works developing projects about sustainability, with a focus on Energy Transition and Professional Training at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Brazil-Germany (AHK-RIO). With knowledge and experience about the photovoltaic sector, she is one of the Brazilian Women’s Network in Solar Energy (MESol) co-founder. In addition, takes part of the International Global Woman’s Network for Energy Transition (GWNet) as a participant in the Mentorship Program (2019 -2020).

João Fávaro, Senior Project Advisor, GIZ

Chemical Engineer and master’s in chemical engineering from the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR). He has 10 years of experience in renewable energy, evaluating and developing energy projects from various sources such as biomass, wind, solar. Currently he is senior project advisor for the projects "Curitiba more Energy" and "Carioca Solarium" supported by the C40 Cities Finance Facility - CFF program, jointly implemented by GIZ (German Cooperation Office) and the C40 network.

Kathlen Schneider, Co-founder Rede Brasileira de Mulheres na Energia Solar (MESol)

Researcher in solar photovoltaics and energy efficiency topics. Has experience in sizing and simulating PV systems integrated to buildings performance, energy efficiency in buildings simulation, distributed generation regulation context with a focus on community solar. Has Bachelor and Master’s degree in Civil Engineering at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC). Currently is researcher from the Solar Energy Research Lab (Fotovoltaica-UFSC) and director from IDEAL Institute. Was a mentee from GWNET’s 2019 Mentorship Program and is one of the co-founders and coordinators of the Brazilian Women’s Network in Solar Energy (MESol Network).
