Increased use of electric cars in Brazil is expected to boost demand for distributed energy generation

Press Release – Thursday, November 2, 2023

Porto Alegre, November 2, 2023 – As the electric car market in Brazil is predicted to exceed 1 million units by 2030, it is clear that distributed generation will have to keep up with increased demand, especially from solar sources. A comprehensive overview of this market is programmed for a session of the 7–8 November Intersolar Summit Brasil Sul Conference at the FIERGS Events Center, Porto Alegre, Brazil. Registration for the conference is open at www.intersolar-summit-brasil.com/ingressos.

“The distributed generation market is an established reality, but its solar photovoltaic segment should be seeing a greater increase in demand as sales of electric car grow. The phasing out of combustion engines will place a considerable demand for greater load on the electrical system, which should further galvanise solar energy projects,” says Leandro Michels, a PhD in Electrical Engineering and an Associate Professor at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM). He heads the Embrapii Unit in Distributed Energy Resources and the Institute for Smart Grids, and will be a speaker at the conference.

Professor Michels’s view is supported by recent estimates by the Energy Research Company (EPE), with updated figures on electric car ownership in Brazil. EPE’s prediction of over 1 million cars by 2030 hinges on the expectation that electric car prices will go down following the entry of new car makers in the country. This is the case of the Chinese green tech company BYD, which has confirmed an investment of R$3 billion to start manufacturing electric vehicles in the Brazilian state of Bahia by 2025. “The introduction of several car models and new manufacturers with this profile in Brazil, I see an increase in demand for distributed energy generation from solar photovoltaic sources,” say Michels. A world-wide projection by the Rocky Mountain Institute predicts that electric cars will comprise between 62% and 86% of total vehicle numbers by 2030.

Intersolar Summit Brasil Sul is a regional version of LATAM’s leading event for the solar industry. It will be held at the FIERGS Events Center, Avenida Assis Brasil 8787, Porto Alegre, Brazil. Exhibition entry is free. Conference tickets are R$440 for purchases until 6 November and R$480 for purchases onsite. The event is organised and produced by Aranda Eventos & Congressos, in partnership with Germany’s Solar Promotion International GmbH.
